Holden Monaro Popup Card

Holden Monaro Popup Card

My brother is a huge fan of Holdens (particularly the Monaro) and V8 supercars, so for his birthday this year I thought I'd make him a car popup card. After searching a little while for some suitable reference pictures I ended up settling on the Holden Monaro (V2) CV8 from 2001-2002.

One of the tricky parts of doing the artwork for this card was finding good reference pictures to trace. This is because most images of a car are from an angle, where to make this you need a front, a back and a side view of the car.

As the card opens the popup turns into a 3D car

I also had to flatten off the curves of the large surfaces which needed to fold, such as the roof, bonnet, windscreens etc. I made sure that these panels were still slightly folded when the card is unfolded flat, to try to keep a bit of the curve in there.

When the card is closed the car folds flat

This popup is based on the box mechanism. I built the frame of the car to fit over a simple box which gives the popup it's structure and strength. The frame of the car mostly hides it, but you can see it if you look through some of the gaps.
